Closer Encounters: Conversations about Artful Stories

Description

Tuesday, February 16, 5:30 p.m. EST

Dive deeper into Artful Stories: Paintings from Historic New England in this second installment of a four-part series of lively online conversations moderated by the exhibition’s co-curators, Nancy Carlisle and Peter Trippi. Explore an aspect of the project’s intriguing themes and artworks by welcoming the unique perspectives of leading curators, scholars, and artists.

Overcoming Obstacles
Two paintings in Artful Stories reflect important aspects of the African American experience in New England. The New Hampshire–based artist Richard Haynes describes why he created his imaginary portrait of Cyrus Bruce, while scholar Rosalyn Delores Elder explores how Edward Mitchell Bannister transcended nineteenth-century attitudes about race to become a successful artist in Providence, Rhode Island. Artful Stories co-curators Nancy Carlisle and Peter Trippi welcome these guests and connect their insights to other aspects of the exhibition.
