Join us for an opening reception celebrating our summer exhibition, Play Days: Contemporary Illustrations of Timeless Children’s Stories. Best known for her novels and short stories, Sarah Orne Jewett also wrote a collection of stories for children. First published 150 years ago, these stories explore themes of imagination, friendship, family, empathy, and connections to nature—ideas that continue to resonate with young readers today. While similar themes appear in Jewett’s writing for adult audiences, her children’s stories capture the curiosity, wonder, and adventurous spirit of young minds discovering the world around them. Play Days features work by illustration students from the University of New Hampshire, who bring her stories to life through contemporary interpretations. Using a diverse range of illustration techniques, the students reimagine Jewett's classic narratives, translating their timeless themes for a 21st-century audience.
