Swett-Ilsley House: A Story of Preservation, Tea, and Tenants
Saturday, May 11, 1:00 - 2:00 p.m.
Swett-Ilsley House, 4 High Road, Newbury, Mass.
Celebrate Preservation Month with Historic New England! Join us for an afternoon at Historic New England's first acquisition, Swett-Ilsley House. The original structure, built in 1670, was one room deep, with later additions more than doubling the size of the house. William Sumner Appleton purchased the property in 1911 for $2,400, believing it to be one of the oldest surviving houses in the region. Engage in conversation and travel throughout the various rooms to learn about Swett-Ilsley House's preservation story, its long history as a female owned tea room, and the lives of its tenants. Light refreshments will be provided.
