Hannah Cowley's 1783 play A Bold Stroke for a Husband features five strong women entangled in the hilarious hijinks of a Shakespearean comedy – think The Taming of the Shrew and Twelfth Night – told from a woman's perspective. After seeing a theatrical production with her husband, Hannah Cowley remarked, "Well, I can write as well myself!" And then she did. Cowley became one of the most popular playwrights of the 1700s, whose daringly hilarious works have been lost to history.
