Members-only Springtime Tea at Swett-Ilsley House
Saturday, May 20, 2:00 - 4:00 p.m.
Swett-Ilsley House, 4 High Road, Newbury, Mass.
During the twentieth century, a series of entrepreneurial and engaging women ran a tea room at Swett-Ilsley House. This new style of road-side restaurant catered to female travelers who finally had the freedom to drive automobiles and were stepping out to explore their world. The c.1670 building, with its romantic past as a tavern, chocolate shop, and printing office, was the perfect setting for Miss Clement's Blue Anchor Tavern in the 1920s and later Miss Lillian Franklin's Four High Road Tea House. Join friends and neighbors to learn about the uniquely feminist history of tea houses and the fabulous women who ran them. Tea House fare will be served (think tea sandwiches, scones, and fruit) as well as hot and iced tea options.
Members $40.
