*NEW DATE* "...a small, makeshift place": Sheffield Chamber Players at the Lyman Estate
New Date: Thursday, June 15, 7:00 p.m.
Thursday, June 1, 7:00 p.m.
Lyman Estate, 185 Lyman Street, Waltham, Mass.
Historic New England welcomes Sheffield Chamber Players back to the Lyman Estate with their season finale, “…a small, makeshift place.” The program, titled after Béla Bartók’s description of the cabin in the Adirondacks where he lived and wrote music during the last summer of his life, examines each of our deep-seated need to find our voice. Bartók’s String Quartet No. 1 in A Minor appears on the program with two other string quartets: Franz Schubert‘s “Quartettsatz,” a single movement from an unfinished quartet; and a newly-commissioned work by acclaimed American composer Kenji Bunch, the much-anticipated second installment in Sheffield's 5-year commissioning project. Find out more about the program here.
A rising group on the regional classical music scene, Sheffield Chamber Players was founded in 2014 on the belief that experiencing chamber music in the intimate settings for which it was written profoundly changes the way listeners respond to music, and to each other. In close proximity to musicians, one can hear the expressive subtleties of a performance with unprecedented clarity. Guests are invited to join the players after the concert to share your thoughts on the program.
