"Sort Apples. Make Butter-Country Life!" Family Food Fun
Sunday, April 23, 1:30 - 2:30 p.m.
Codman Estate, 34 Codman Road, Lincoln, Mass.
“Sort Apples. Make Butter – Country Life!” wrote Hugh Codman in his diary, describing life on the Codman Estate a century ago. The Codman family’s culinary interests might sound familiar today, among them: eating local, perfecting their coffee brew, and dining al fresco.
On this special tour, learn what was grown and preserved on their estate. How do their recipes compare to modern methods? The Codman family's menus, cookbook collection, tableware, and even a cabinet of vintage home canned goods provide rich context for both their personal preferences and the palate of the times.
Grown ups will visit with Codman Lead Guide Camille Arbogast and she will discuss how the Codmans' approach to food connects to present culinary attitudes. Meanwhile, kids will have fun with a kitchen activity with Codman Site Manager Wendy Hubbard. – shaking, making, and stamping butter while eating apples. After the program, take home your butter, apples, and some tasty shortbread cookies from the Codman family’s recipes.
Adult $10; Children $5
Appropriate for kids ages 6 and up.
