Virtual Program- Early Rhode Island Family Cemeteries and Their Stories
Wednesday, April 19, 5:30 p.m.
The smallest state in the Union has a large number of cemeteries--more than 3,200--most of them small plots that are privately owned. At Historic New England's Casey Farm is one of these small cemeteries that not only represents the family tree in stone, it tells us more about the people who once walked these lands through the remarkable monuments that remain. Bob Geake, local historian and author, will tell us why Rhode Island burial grounds are so different from those in other New England states, and give examples of the way cemeteries convey messages if you know where to look. The program is part of the Rhode Island Historical Cemeteries Awareness and Preservation Weeks in April and May of 2023.
Robert A. Geake has been writing about Rhode Island and New England history for over 30 years. He is the author of several books, including A History of the Narragansett Tribe, Historic Rhode Island Farms, From Slaves to Soldiers, and more recently, Death in Early New England: Rites, Rituals, and Remembrance.
